Soi 7 ★★★☆☆

Soi 7, literally “Street 7” in Thai is on Wyndam Street in Hong Kong, so you will not find it anywhere near the famous nightlife of Soi 2 and Soi 4 in Bangkok! Still run by the Koh Thai group, Soi 7 has been re-launched as a modern Thai restaurant. A compact space, it has been completely renovated with a casual and street vibe that opens up the venue making it more accessible.

The open bar area downstairs has large tables and high seating, perfect for groups whether dining or drinking, a few lower seats facing Wyndham street for people watching, while the upstairs dining area is more intimate and away from the hustle of Wyndam Street. A selection of innovative cocktails with Thai ingredients and locally brewed craft beers make this a great spot for post-work or pre-dinner drinks.

The food is a blend of traditional Thai flavours with a modern twist and contemporary European and Asian influences. We started with the Tuna Tartare Wonton “tacos”. As the name suggests, this was served with a crisp wonton taco and a chili lime dressing. A great lively appetizer to wake up the taste buds, it was spicy but not overpowering. Next up we had the Spicy Shrimp, sea shrimp tempura with a sriracha-aioli dressing. This dish also had the spiciness associated with Thai cuisine but with Japanese influences. The dressing was creamy and spicy, and the tempura batter was light and simply moreish. Eat it while it’s fresh and crispy.

The most traditional dish we had was the Pad Thai Lobster. Just how you would expect a classic Pad Thai but taken to a new level. The lobster was succulent and juicy and the presentation was stunning.  Thankfully, it was easy to eat as the lobster had been helpfully removed from the shell.

By this time, we were getting pretty full, so to finish up our main, we had “Laughing Bull”. Slow cooked beef cooked sous vide style and finished in the grill, served with a traditional Thai dipping sauce. The Nam-Jim-Jaew dressing was spicy with hints of lime and tamarind. The spicy-sweet-sour combination was a perfect match to the succulent and juicy beef.

We love the makeover of Koh Thai. Soi 7 will give you a new experience of Thai food. Aroy!
