Saudi Arabia’s police have arrested people who appeared in what they call a “gay wedding scene” video that has gone viral. The video circulating on Saudi social shows two men walking by each other, one wearing what looks like a wedding veil, while confetti is being thrown over their heads and music is played in the background.
Police have announced they have arrested all involved and everyone involved will go before the prosecution. There are no written laws in Saudi Arabia concerning sexual orientation. Judges use the principles Islamic law and punishment for homosexual acts could be anything from lashings to being put to death.
Saudi Arabia has taken steps lately to improve human rights and become a more “tolerant” society for women, but the reaction to the video shows that the country still has ways to go for equality for everyone, including LGBTQ citizens.
