Sam Smith, the multi-award winning singer of songs such as “Stay With Me” and “Too Good at Goodbyes”, has come out as non-binary. Non-binary people identify either as female or male. They prefer to use the pronouns they or them instead of she or he. Speaking for the first time publicly In an emotional interview with Jameela Jamil, Smith spoke about it saying “I’ve always had a bit of a war going within my body and mind….I do think like a woman sometimes, in my head. Sometimes I’ve questioned ‘Do I want a sex change?’”
After hearing conversations with non-binary and genderqueer people, he began to identify with everything they were speaking about. “When I saw the ‘non-binary’, ‘genderqueer and I read into and I heard these people speaking I was like, ‘Fuck, that is me’” In the interview, Sam also talked about the dealings with fame and the issues with body image. Coming out has made Sam happier with his body image as well.
