There’s something to be said about simplicity. If you do something well, why change it? In fact, why do anything else?
With that thought in mind, I was curious what it would be like to eat at La Vache (The Cow) which only has one dish on the menu! Intrigued? Yes I was.
La Vache is a steakhouse of course, and quite simply only serves one dish. No, you can’t even choose different cuts of steak- it’s a trimmed entrecôte steak and fries with a side salad.
The restaurant itself is styled on a Parisien brasserie and inspired by the famous Relais de Venise in Paris which also serves just the one dish. You do of course get to choose how you want your steak cooked and it’s served with generous pots of bearnaise sauce made according to a secret recipe.
So of course you would expect the steak to be pretty good and I have to admit that it was quite simply one of the best I have had in a long time. Perfectly cooked, slightly charred on the outside and tender and juicy inside, bursting with flavour it melted in the mouth. Divine.
Free flow fries (we only managed a second helping!) were the ideal accompaniment and the bearnaise sauce was light, creamy and slightly tangy – a decedent but perfect sauce to match the steak.
There’s a range of good reasonably priced wine and a fabulous array of deserts to choose from so choice is not all restricted! This restaurant was packed when we visited (on a Wednesday night). After trying the steak, I’m not surprised though a little disappointed it took me 11 months since opening to discover this place, I’m definitely going back for more and highly recommend you give this a try too. Enjoy.
