Interview with Chi Chi DeVayne

Ms. Chi Chi DeVayne will be gracing our city with her presence and her southern charm at the opening party for the Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.  The Queen from Shreveport, Louisiana, USA, who does not get ready but stays ready,  made it to the top four in season eight of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Before landing in Hong Kong, she talked to Dim Sum.

Dim Sum: Hong Kong is considered a conservative city for gay rights.  Shreveport, Louisiana is probably way more conservative and way smaller than Hong Kong.  What was it like growing up gay in Western Louisiana, an area of the USA that is very conservative?
Chi Chi: It was very tough growing up gay in Southern United States. Half of the people already don’t like you because the color of your skin, but to be gay on top of that, it was just a nightmare.

Dim Sum: When did you start and who inspired you to do drag?
Chi Chi: I started doing drag in 2010 at the age of 22 years old. I got a late start but it all worked out for the good.  I was inspired by my late drag mother Kourtney DeVayne, she was the best drag queen I know

Dim Sum: What would you tell the people of Hong Kong who are wanting to do drag?  How would someone get started?
Chi Chi: I would tell the people of Hong Kong to keep striving and pushing towards your dreams. They really do come true and I am a living witness to that you should never give up.  To get started, just buy a sickening wig and a pair of sickening high-heel shoes, and work your stuff

Dim Sum: What are the most amazing things you have done after RuPaul’s Drag Race?
Chi Chi: The most amazing thing that has happened to me is that I’ve gotten to travel all across the world and meet all different types of people. That’s something I have always wanted to do but thought I would never get a chance to.

Dim Sum: Have you been to Asia before? What are you most looking forward to about coming to Hong Kong?
Chi Chi: This will be my first time in Asia and I am looking to at least try some of the street cuisine.  Pray for me.

Dim Sum: In the show, you mentioned that you love to eat.  Would you eat local Hong Kong dishes like Chicken Feet and Thousand Year-old Eggs?
Chi Chi: I would totally try the chicken feet but I’m not sure about an egg that’s 1000 years old.
