There is a lot of shit going on in the world today. Lately, it seems that every day, there is a news story about the LGBT community being stigmatized, mocked or ridiculed. From bathroom laws in the United States to the rise of anti-LGBT sentiment in Indonesia and other countries, just when you think the world has progressed, something happens to move that progress back a bit. In 2005, IDAHOT (International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia) was started as a grass roots campaign to help bring attention to this sort of stigmatization and it has spread to many different countries and cities around the world, including Hong Kong.
“Dispel the Homophobic Ignorance Spirits” will be this year’s theme for the Hong Kong IDAHO+ rally. At the rally, people will have the chance to meet the new Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Professor Alfred Chan Cheung-ming, who is making a good move to support the LGBT community. The rally will be held on Sunday, May 15 in Causeway Bay (it is usually held on May 17 around the world, the day in which the World Health Organization removed homosexuality as a disease).
